Pre-Cataract Surgery Instructions
At Lusaka Eye Hospital, we are committed to ensuring a smooth and successful cataract surgery experience. Please follow these instructions carefully to prepare for your procedure. If you have any questions, contact our team immediately.
Important: Failure to follow these instructions may result in the postponement or cancellation of your surgery.
1. Medications
- Continue all prescribed medications unless instructed otherwise by your doctor.
- If you are on blood thinners (e.g., aspirin, warfarin), inform your surgeon at least 7 days before surgery.
- You may be prescribed antibiotic or anti-inflammatory eye drops to start a few days before surgery. Use them exactly as directed.
2. Fasting Instructions
- Do not eat or drink anything (including water) after midnight the night before your surgery, unless otherwise instructed.
- If you have diabetes, consult your doctor about managing your fasting and medication schedule.
3. Personal Preparations
- Arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery, as you will not be able to drive.
- Take a bath or shower the night before or the morning of your surgery.
- Avoid wearing makeup, lotions, perfumes, or jewelry on the day of surgery.
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing to the hospital.
4. What to Bring
- Your national ID or any valid identification.
- A list of all medications you are currently taking.
- Any prescribed eye drops or medications provided by the hospital.
- Comfortable sunglasses to wear after surgery to protect your eyes.
5. Day of Surgery
- Arrive at Lusaka Eye Hospital at least 1 hour before your scheduled surgery time.
- Expect to spend a few hours at the hospital for pre-surgery preparations, the procedure, and recovery observation.
- Follow all instructions given by the medical staff regarding eye preparation and anesthesia.
6. Health Considerations
- Inform your doctor immediately if you develop a cold, fever, or any illness before surgery.
- Notify us of any allergies, especially to medications or anesthesia.
- If you experience sudden vision changes or eye pain, contact the hospital right away.
